Turkey, Bulgaria and Ukraine will be the most popular destinations for Moldovan tourists in summer 2008

According to a poll held by the “Business Expert” newspaper jointly with Victoria Asigurari among Moldovan travel agencies, this summer most Moldovans will prefer to relax in Turkey, Bulgaria and Ukraine. 23% of travel agencies noted that Turkey and Bulgaria will be the most popular destinations, and 20% named Ukraine. Other top destinations include Romania (10%), Greece (6%), Cyprus (4%), Egypt and Spain (3% each) and other destinations – 8%.

Agencies will prepare tourist packages depending on the above preferences. Thus, 84.3% of the respondent travel agencies promote Turkey as the main direction, while 46% of respondents offer tours to Bulgaria, and 28.1% – to Egypt. Travel agencies will more than ever give special attention to exotic directions. This year Moldovan tourists will prefer such destinations as Japan (12.5%), China (12.5%), Thailand (18.75%), Singapore (15.62%) etc. Leading European destinations (except Bulgaria and Romania) are Spain (21.87%), Greece (18.75%), Croatia (18.75%), France (15.62%), Italy (15.62%) and Portugal (15.62%). Mr. Vlad Bercu, executive director of on-line publication “Business Expert”, declared that “few travel experts wanted to make price forecasts for summer season 2008. It is safe to say that prices will slightly increase. Travel agencies claim that Turkey and Bulgaria will be more popular than Romania and Ukraine due to a better value for money, as well as due to an aggressive advertising campaign launched by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism as early as in winter”. “Insurance for travels abroad has already become standard. The fact that tourists request accident insurance policy for traveling abroad even if they travel for personal rather than business purposes demonstrates consciousness of certain possible risks and travel market improvement”, says Vitalie Goreacii, Commercial Director of Victoria Asigurari. Travel companies claim that more than half of tourists spending their vacation abroad are businessmen. Their share makes up 54%. At the same time, the share of officials in the total number of those who will go abroad makes up 23%. 16% are civil servants and other categories of tourists make up 7%. The poll was held by analysts of Business Expert and Victoria Asigurari in March 2008 among 32 travel agents in all districts of the capital. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2007 the most popular destination was Turkey (31.2% of the total number of tourists who went abroad) followed by Ukraine (21.2%), Romania (18.7%) and Bulgaria (16.0%). Moldovan tourists visited over 40 foreign countries. In 2007 the number of tourists and excursionists who went abroad through travel agencies and tour operators made up 81.8 thousand people or 20.6% more than in 2006.
